Deep within the moist temperate forests of Kashmir, I walk, climb, and sometimes fall,I scrape, I claw, I get up, and I walk. I search and search for a silent resident: a bird famous for its vibrant colors and limited distribution, the holy grail of wildlife in Pakistan. Endemic to a few stretches of dense oak, conifer, and rhododendron forests, the Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) boasts striking crimson plumage, a black hooded head, and brilliant blue facial skin, making it one of the most beautiful and elusive pheasants in the Himalayas. Trekking 25 km through mighty terrain, with ice soft as cotton and brutal as fire, every wrong step could send you tumbling into the depths, but the chance to witness this rare bird, so secretive and shy, makes every hardship worth it.
